FAQ
Yard questions, answered
How often should I mow my lawn?
Most cool-season lawns do best cut every 7 to 10 days during the growing season — a bit more often after heavy rain, less when it's dry. Try not to take off more than about a third of the blade length in a single pass.
Why does my lawn have dry patches or yellow spots?
Usually uneven watering, compacted soil, or a spot a sprinkler isn't quite reaching. Grubs and heavy foot traffic can cause it too. Fixing the water pattern and aerating solves most cases.
When's the right time for spring and fall cleanup?
Spring cleanup is best once the ground has thawed and dried out enough to work without compacting the soil — usually a few weeks after the snow's gone. Fall cleanup is best after most of the leaves are down but before the ground freezes.
Should I aerate my lawn?
If the soil feels hard as a sidewalk, or water pools instead of soaking in, it's worth doing — typically once a year, in spring or fall.
